Summer in Taiwan – Kaohsiung

This is blogging on the go. I’m able to have Internet access everywhere because I purchased a prepaid card from Taiwan Mobile (台湾大哥大). The prepaid card includes 7 day unlimited Internet usage and $150 airtime. Initially wanted to buy prepaid card from Chunghwa telecom as I read online that it is the biggest telecom operator here and hence it has a wide coverage. However, I was unable to find the shop at Fengchia so I purchased from alternative telecom instead. So far, I haven’t had any problem with the reception.

My family took high speed rail from Taichung to Kaohsiung. The HSR station at Kaohsiung is called Zuoying. The journey was only an hour.

Transport in Kaohsiung is convenient. There is mass rapid transport (MRT) aka subway. Just walk to exit 2 to get to the MRT station.

This is a good design, in my opinion.

Easycard cannot be used for Kaohsiung MRT. We purchased one-way tickets instead as I calculated that it would be cheaper than purchasing a 1 day pass. If you are visiting many places, a one day pass may be worth it.

The 1 – way ticket comes in the form of token, instead of the usual card design. You just need to scan it when you enter the gantry and insert upon exit.

To get to our accommodation, we alighted at Formosa Boulevard station. Many people come here for photography.

We stayed at Kindness hotel at Kaohsiung. My parents are very satisfied with the stay. It is a 5 minute walk from the MRT station and liuhe night market is just nearby.

The hotel offers breakfast buffet from 7 to 10 am.

From 5 pm onwards, the hotel also offers tea reception.

Other free facilities include printing, laundry etc. Given that we only paid TWD 2,400 per night, it is definitely worth it.

Besides, the hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. They do play a big role in giving visitors an enjoyable stay. I will like to commend the hotel staff for their greetings. Even when one of the hotel staff was talking to the cab driver outside the hotel, he noticed our presence and greeted us. Some of the staff always wear a smile on their faces. If I encounter any place worth recommending, I will do so and this is definitely a hotel to recommend. Good location, service, facilities and furnishing.

At night, we took the subway to Houyi station and walked along a straight path to get to the heart of love river. It is a quiet place so in my opinion, it is a good and romantic hangout for couples. Otherwise, there is nothing much exciting about this particular spot.

The love river is big so I guess it stretches several areas. To get to other spots of the love river, do alight at the city council station.

The next day, we made our way to the Lotus Pond. We took the subway to Ecological District station, took bus 35 and alighted at this bus stop. The bus ride only costs TWD 12. The bus will announce that it is approaching 莲池塘 (lian chi tang).

This is the place!

You have to go through 9 Curve Bridge 九曲桥 to get to the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas. You enter through the dragon’s throat and exit through the tiger’s mouth. This symbolizes turning bad luck to good fortune.

We then walked about 800 metres to Zuoying train station, where we bought the ticket to Kaohsiung train station to transit to the MRT station.

After which, we took subway to Yanchengpu station.

We took exit 1 and found a place (walk further down from Gongcha) to have lunch. The price is reasonable – most of the dishes are priced at TWD 100 or 150. The bar restaurant is well designed. However, it has a rather confusing concept – English retro design, serves chinese food, plays korean music.

After lunch, we walked south along Dayong Road to get to the Pier-2 Art Center. There are many art displays but I shan’t be a spoiler! Go there and explore yourself. (:

At night, we visited Liuhe night market. It is a small night market that stretches one lane only.
